If you are using On Guard on multiple computers, you may want the same On Guard configuration on each computer. Using the Save Settings To Network command in the File menu, you can save the configuration to any computer on the network. Using the Save Settings To File command, you can save to a file which can be opened by the On Guard Configuration Application on other computers.
Saving the On Guard Configuration to the Network
Any AppleTalk-compatible network (LocalTalk, EtherTalk, TokenTalk, etc.) is supported via the Open Settings From Network and Save Settings To Network commands. AppleTalk must be enabled on both the local and remote computers to use these commands. You can determine if AppleTalk is enabled by opening the Chooser and looking at the status of the radio buttons in the lower right corner of the Chooser dialog.
◊ Note Only computers that are currently running On Guard can be configured with the Save Settings To Network command. If you want to configure computers on the network, make sure On Guard is installed and activated on each computer before proceeding. After initially installing On Guard, make sure you have restarted the computer to activate the On Guard software. See Chapter 2, Installing On Guard, for details on how to install On Guard on each computer.
To save the configuration using the Save Settings To Network command:
1. Select Save Settings To Network from the File menu. A dialog
box appears that allows you to choose the computers where you
wish to install the On Guard configuration.
2. Select the computers where you want to save the On Guard
Configuration. If no computers appear in the dialog box, first
make sure that AppleTalk is enabled for the computer you are
configuring on. Click the Update button at any time to update the
list of networked computers. If the computer you want to save the
configuration to still does not appear, go to the remote computer
and make sure AppleTalk is enabled and that On Guard is installed
on the remote computer.

◊ Note On Guard does not require Apple File Sharing to be enabled, nor do any of the hard disks of the networked computers need to be mounted via the Chooser or marked as shareable via the Share command in the Finder.
3. Click the Save button.
Saving the On Guard configuration to the network installs all the configuration options onto other computers, including users’ folders and the advanced security options. If the user’s folder does not already exist on the other computer, then it will be created. If the user’s folder already exists on the other computer, then it will be left alone. If the files referred to in the advanced security options do not reside in the same folder hierarchy, then no access permissions for those files are set on the remote computer. This process does not copy the contents of the user’s folder to remote computers.
◊ Note Saving the On Guard configuration to a remote compute overwrites all the configuration settings on the remote computer.
Opening the On Guard Configuration from the Network
To load a configuration onto a local computer using the Open Settings From Network command:
1. Select the Open Settings From Network item from the File menu.
A dialog box appears that allows you to choose the computer whose
On Guard configuration you want to load. Only the computers on
the network that are currently running On Guard will be displayed
in this dialog box.
2. Select the computer whose settings you want to be opened.
3. Click the Open button.

Saving the On Guard Configuration to a File
To install the same configuration on other computers using the Save Settings to File command:
1. Select the Save Settings To File item from the File menu. A dialog
box, shown in Figure 34 below, allows you to create the On Guard
Configuration File.

2. Choose the location where you would like to save the settings
file and enter a name for the file.
3. Click the Save button.
◊ Note Saving the On Guard configuration to a file that happens to reside on a network volume is not the same as using the Save Settings To Network command. To keep the configuration consistent across a network, you must use the Save Settings To Network command.
4. Take the file you created to the Macintosh computer where you
wish to install the On Guard configuration and launch the On Guard
Configuration application.
5. Choose the Open Settings From File item from the File menu. A
dialog box appears that allows you to select the On Guard
Configuration File.
6. Select the file you created in steps 1 and 2 above.
7. Click the Open button.
This process installs all configuration options, including the designation of the user’s folder and the advanced security options. If the user’s folder does not already exist on the other computer, then it will be automatically created. If the user’s folder already exists on the other computer, then it is left alone. This process does not copy the contents of the user’s folder onto other computers.
